What is POETA?
The Technology-Based Employment Opportunities in the Americas Program (POETA) is much more than a training course. It's an open door for hundreds of people with disabilities who, through technology, find not only employment, but a path to independence. Led by the Foundation for the Americas and Microsoft, POETA allows us to offer our participants tools that transform their lives and empower them to dream big.
What is the objective?
POETA's goal is to increase the socioeconomic inclusion of vulnerable communities. Through education in technological tools, doors that previously seemed unattainable are opened. This program not only provides job opportunities but also propels its participants toward independence, offering them the necessary resources to enrich their lives. POETA connects the public, private, and civil society sectors to generate lasting and real change in social development models.
How does it work?
Each POETA center is managed by a local partner of the Foundation for the Americas, who works closely with the community, promoting inclusion and access to Adaptive Technologies (AT) that facilitate computer use for people with disabilities. This not only improves their skills but also gives them the tools to be an active part of a competitive work environment.
Although POETA centers are primarily focused on people with disabilities, their reach extends beyond. They also serve other vulnerable populations, such as at-risk youth, female heads of household, and indigenous groups.
Their training is comprehensive and holistic, including vocational guidance, ICT training, entrepreneurship, social education, civic responsibility, and personal development.
